Regardless, many recurrent members have settled down here. As long as our community isn't run by a a corrupt organization, then we'll be fine.

I suggest we leave this site as it is for the time being and wait for the final outcome on Mojo. If the BOM forums aren't up by this weekend then we could make this board permanent by integrating it with BOT. Any better option, like a better message-board hosting site, could also be explored by then.

I think we need to encourage more people to participate in the polls! There's nearly 300 users, and only 45 people have placed a vote. The more people vote, the better idea Shawn has of what the community wants!

Shawn, does it cost money to start up a proboard or phpBB board? Most forum software is free, but setting up a phpBB (or one of the dozens of others) forum costs money. It needs to be run on a server somewhere, and that involves a monthly cost. Proboards is free because it runs on Proboards servers. This is an arrangement with drawbacks - no real customization ability, and the ceding of your content to Proboards, which is even more of a faceless entity than the IMDB management is. If BOT-forum grows as large as BOM forum was, it may actually require a fairly meaty server. The least expensive server packages probably wouldn't be able to take it. The cost for a single owner might actually be rather substantial, so other funding measures (ads at the least) will probably need to be considered. For now, stay here, until the details are worked out. It's not something to rush into. If you can, find someone with expertise on these issues. Make sure part of the setup involves making a regular backup. Given enough time, servers will almost always implode and take their data with them; this may be what happened at BOM forums. |
