Weak Box Office: ‘Harold & Kumar’ Franchise Best $550K Midnights, ‘Tower Heist’ $85Kwww.deadline.com/2011/11/weak-midnight-box-office-harold-kumar-550k-tower-heist-85k/FRIDAY NOON UPDATE: Hollywood studios are worried that the recent box office slump in North America will hurt what is supposed to be a big weekend kicking off the holiday movie season. Already executives are looking for less. “Based on our noon averages, the overall marketplace looks very soft right now,” one exec emails me. Insiders tell me that Universal’s Tower Heist opened with $85K in midnight shows and easily takes #1 today with anywhere from $7.5M to $10.5M depending on the degree of date night wannasee. What was once thought a sure-thing $35+M first weekend is now projected to eke out $30M for the R-rated action comedy directed by Brett Ratner and starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller. But any double-digit number with a ’3′ in front of it is reason to celebrate in these days of lowered expectations as young males have generally keep away from multiplexes since August. ”Tower Heist looks good. Got big break when Puss In Boots moved up,” a source tells me about the Oceans Eleven-style heist movie intended to appeal more to adults. (But I’ve been worried about those trailers that don’t depict even one genuinely funny line or scene.) DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots distributed by Paramount will have very good hold off last Friday’s/Saturday’s freak East Coast snowstorm and funky Halloween weekend with a $25M outcome for #2. New Line/Warner Bros’ low-budget A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas debuted after midnight in 1,000 locations for $550K which is a franchise best. It opens wide today in 2,875 runs with 2,943 3D screens and expectations are for a $4.5M to $5.5M Friday debut to finish #3 with $19M finish which, again, is a gift in these soft attendance times. Worst case scenario this weekend? Tower Heist can’t crack $30M and Harold & Kumar winds up low to mid teens. And no other pic even collects $7M.

Haha! Classic Nikki!
I don't think Tower Heist even deserves $30m, I'm surprised it's been tracking that well even if it does open softer than expected.

Also, $25m estimate for PIB, that would be a great hold after last week's disaster.

I'm not paying attention to any of these estimates yet.

I dunno. Why even bother reporting $85k? I have nothing to compare it to though...

I'm not real familiar with the Harold & Kumar franchise, though I guess it's a good thing if it's the biggest opener of the franchise.
I never really thought of Tower Heist as a big midnights earner. They had one for H&K at my theater but not for Tower Heist.

Nikki's reporting is not comedy...it's more of a thriller.

I prefer drama/thriller/action but comedies have been great this year. I think Tower Heist looks awful though, and I don't like Eddie Murphy.

At least it's not the family friendly Eddie Murphy, and at least the movie looks nowhere near as bad as a certain other comedy coming out soon.

I don't know what but Tower Heist looks better than anything Murphy has done in years. He used to be hilarious back in the day.

If HK3 opens to 5 mill, there is no way it hits 19 mill for the weekend. This is a sequel, and if anything it'll stay flat for Saturday if not decrease.
I don't think the third will have good legs. It's not that funny, in fact, I think the formula was to try to make offensive but harmless jokes towards all races and all religions. This might have worked in he other two films, but in this one, it's just meh. It's not a bad film, but it is so unfunny that it was painful for me at times. When NPH comes on screen, it picks up but that is very late in the movie.
As for Tower Heist, again, not funny at all. It is a decent film, but it isn't that funny. I'm a big fan of Stiller, Murphy, Affleck and Broderick, but they have the occasional funny moment, but nothing memorable. Too bad.

Murphy isn't in it as much as I expected and Michael Peña and Téa Leoni have the best parts. Tbh I was a little disappointed by it.

With 5.5 on Friday, I see 14 for the weekend tops. Especially considering Escape from Guantanamo opened with 6 million on Friday 3.5 years ago and couldn't break 15

Insiders tell me that Universal’s Tower Heist opened with $85K in midnight shows and easily takes #1 today with anywhere from $7.5M to $10.5M depending on the degree of date night wannasee in 3,367 theaters. What was once thought a sure-thing $35+M first weekend is now projected to eke out $30M as if it were an R-rated action comedy like Due Date (32.7M opening) which Uni execs keep using as a comp. But Tower Heist is actually PG-13 directed by Brett Ratner and starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller so should be earning much more. Nevertheless, any double-digit number with a ’3′ in front of it is reason to celebrate in these days of lowered expectations as young males have abandoned the multiplexes since August. ”Tower Heist looks good. (But I’ve been worried about those trailers that don’t depict even one genuinely funny line or scene.) Tower Heist opens day and date overseas in 21 territories including the UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Sweden, Austria, Taiwan, Spain, India, and South Africa.
DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots distributed by Paramount will have very good hold off last Friday’s/Saturday’s freak East Coast snowstorm and funky Halloween weekend with a $25M outcome for #2. New Line/Warner Bros’ low-budget A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas debuted after midnight in 1,000 locations for $550K which is a franchise best but also the first 3D installment with higher ticket prices. It opens wide today in 2,875 runs with 2,943 3D screens and expectations are for a $4.5M to $5.5M Friday debut to finish #3 with $19M finish which, again, is a gift in these soft attendance times.

They would be very good numbers but to expect them to be accurate this early is naive.
I'm hoping Puss stays above 25m and TW opens to 30m.

Box Office Report: Brett Ratner's 'Tower Heist' Steals No. 1 Spot on Fridaywww.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-report-tower-heist-257835The action comedy starring Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and Matthew Broderick will gross $8 million to $11 million Friday for a weekend opening of $25 million to $32 million; "Puss in Boots" purring loudly in its second frame. Brett Ratner's PG-13 action-comedy Tower Heist is easily winning the Friday box office race with a gross in the $8 million to $11 million range. With nighttime numbers only beginning to come in, early projections show the movie grossing anywhere from $25 million to $32 million for the weekend. The $85 million Universal film has plenty of star power in a cast led by Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and Matthew Broderick. Murphy, whose live-action career has suffered in recent years, should see better numbers than usual. Casey Affleck, Alan Alda, Tea Leoni, Michael Pena and Gabourey Sidibe also star in the film, about a group of non-crooks who set out to rob the man who swindled them out of their pensions. DreamWorks Animation and Paramount's Puss in Boots is enjoying a strong hold in its second Friday, and is looking at a second-place finish for the weekend, ahead of the frame's other new wide player, stoner comedy A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. Very early returns suggest Puss in Boots will gross in the $22 million to $24 million range in its second outing after opening to a subdued $34.1 million last weekend, when a surprise nor'easter on the East Coast took a bite out of the box office. From Warner Bros. and New Line, the modestly budgeted Harold & Kumar should open between $15 million and $18 million. The R-rated pic cost $20 million to produce. Earlier on Friday, Universal wasn't sure Tower Heist -- produced by Imagine Entertianment's Brian Grazer and Kim Roth -- would get beyond $26 million or $27 million, but then numbers improved notably as early evening shows got underway on the East Coast. A year ago on the same weekend, Warner Bros.' comedy Due Date opened to $32.7 million at the domestic box office, and while Universal is using that film as a comp, the studio had lowered its projection to between $25 million and $30 million because of the soft marketplace. Wherever Tower Heist comes in, overall domestic box office revenues will be well short of the same weekend last year, when DreamWorks Animation and Paramount's Megamind debuted to $46 million, followed by Due Date at $32.7 million. The dip is a continued reminder of the general box office downturn -- in part due to the flight of young poeple from the multiplex -- and comes just as Hollywood prepares for the busy year-end holiday season.

I think that's pretty good for TH. Especially when you consider the last movies the two stars and director made, respectively:
Stiller's Little Fockers did OK. But nothing like what you would expect a MTP franchise film to do. In fact, Stiller has been relying on sequels in the past few years. Each of which did worse than its predecessor.
RH3 was made in 2007 and the "Rat" has been attached to everything from adaptions of cheesy has-been 90's comics and Conan the Barbarian with nothing getting off the ground(where rats live...you know).
For Murphy, his last two live action efforts were Meet Dave and Imagine That. 'Nuff said there.

Tower Heist getting just to 30M isn't bad.. just decent. AVHKC 3D getting over 15M and Puss in Boot getting 25M is great! Heck if AVHKC 3D gets 19M, I will be shocked. I thought that film would struggle to get 12M

I know there's the Madoff thing that I guess makes Tower Heist relevant, but this Stiller-Murphy action comedy combo would have been huge 10 years ago. Even today an R-rated version of this with the original intended cast of Murphy, Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle would have broken out, IMO. Tower Heist will do fine, but it didn't really have much enticing viewers.
550k is good for H&K midnights. I'd imagine the ratio from midnights to OD and OD to OW will be better than the last one, though Sunday will be weak.

Guys, should we consider Neil Patrick Harris a box office clutch? I can't help but feel they advertised him more than the title characters....and it working.
Still good weekend; not the best winter opener but not one of the worst.
