SATURDAY PM, 4TH UPDATE: What a shocker! DreamWorks Animation/Paramount’s Puss In Boots claws its way to #1 tonight with $15.5M Saturday and will win the weekend with an estimated $34M. It easily beat Universal’s much-buzzed Tower Heist which made $10M Saturday for only a $25M weekend. (This is like when Cowboys & Aliens got Smurf-ed over the summer.) New Line/Warner Bros’ A Very Harold And Kumar 3D Christmas eked out $5.5M Saturday fr a disappointing $14.5M weekend. Refined numbers and full analysis later tonight.
WTF That is crazy for Puss. Decent Saturday for TH and everything recovered nicely from last weeks depressed weekend.

So will the release date change still end up benefiting Puss overall? It'll go into next week with about $75 million in the bank.

I bet Katzenberg's doing a victory dance; considering such a great drop, could we see this kind of staggered release in the future? Either way it's a big victory. This films a charming, fun adventure. What more you want?

I'm sure we'll see it again if the Holiday season is ever as stuffed with kids films as it is this year.

Okay, so that Halloween weekend release idea was smart. For PIB last weekend really acted like previews. Should easily be good for #1 next weekend too.

How in the world is 14.5M disappointing for Harold and Kumar?

14.5M is disapointing for Harold and Kumar 3??? Great for PIB It's disappointing considering the prime release date, the marketing, the 3D upcharge and Neil Patrick Harris' cult status resulted in a third less of an audience.

14.5M is disapointing for Harold and Kumar 3??? Great for PIB If you look at it from a pessimistic perspective than yes dissapointing is a justifiable word to use. It was tracking well, has 3D but managed to open up beneath Guantanomo Bay. It had potential for an opening closer to 20m. Personally I think people are tired of 3D and considering it's 20m budget it will be another success. That would be a 99% increase for Puss from Friday, I'm leaning towards Nikki having slightly overestimated and we see something more like 14.5m with actuals.

Yeah, why is 14.5 million disappointing for a low budget stoner movie? Great number for Puss but the Tower Heist is just meh.

Thats huge for Puss if it holds up Did´ent Bolt do the same a few years back also? With the same multiplier as Bolt it will reach 147m, basically Megamind numbers, Bolt dropped 63% on it's 3rd weekend, Puss will have another great hold next weekend and then Happy Feet might hurt it and it enters that big patch of kid films.
