Judging by early Friday grosses, "Puss in Boots" will take the top spot at the weekend box office.
Observers say the Paramount-Dreamworks Animation 3D pic should gross in the mid-thirties. Depending on how Friday-night crowds turn out, though, the film could see slightly higher earnings of around $38 million.
For comparative numbers, "Puss in Boots" was tracking below DWA's 2010 fall entry "Megamind," which opened to $46 million during the weekend of Nov. 5.
Twentieth Century Fox's "In Time," with an expected three-day perf of $12 million to $13 million, should beat FilmDistrict's "Rum Diary."
B.O. observers expect Johnny Depp-toplined "Diary" to gross between $6 million and $8 million -- not surprising given the film's limited target demo. Some tracking services from earlier this week suggested the pic could earn between $8 million and $11 million, based on the popularity of Johnny Depp.

Source?
I think we will see numbers revised upward. Game 7 of the World Series is definitely having an impact, IMO.

Can't help but feel let down by Puss, it had everything going for it but I guess awareness must have been weaker than most thought. Animation is really struggling to make a dent in the US market, I just hope Tintin doesn't dissapoint.
Solid number for In Time, had so much going for it but buzz died down over the last few days, I don't expect much legs, will be impressed if it passes 40m.
Not a great hold for PA3 but it should stabilise over the weekend, 100m is basically locked which is awesome.
I'm suprised Real Steel isn't in the top 5, I would have expected a 6-7m weekend. {EDIT, yeh I just realised Footloose had the bigger Friday and Real Steel is a SAT movie and will likely end up above TRD}
. . . .
Anyone see the new Hugo trailer? Looks much better, I could see it finding an audience but still miss 100m.
Tintin is doing well in Europe, I hope we get more numbers soon but most of the international posters that post france, uk, asia number won't know about this place.

Fox is releasing bomb after bomb. Epic.
And The Rum Diary proves that stars don't matter anymore in America. One actor alone can't open a movie.

Tintin doing some big business in Portugal. Since Tuesday is a holiday here, I am expecting a fantastic result for the first 7 days (I know that Portugal is not UK or France, but it is likely doing big business there too).

That is awful for PiB. It will need some epic legs. I am shocked. This may not outgross Megamind at this point.

Actually, I'm not that surprised about PiB. It's a spin-off from a tired franchise. From the trailers I saw, it looked like a direct-to-video flick.
